The New Mexico Genealogical Society, founded in 1960, is composed entirely of volunteers. 2010 will be our 50th year of providing research materials and networking opportunities for family historians.

The New Mexico Genealogical Society

Submitting Articles for Publication in
the New Mexico Genealogist
or NMGSweb

The New Mexico Genealogical Society welcomes articles from genealogists, historians, and others interested in genealogical research. The NMGS publishes articles on these subjects:

  • descriptions or itemizations of genealogical materials, records, and collections
  • research techniques and procedures
  • historical events with genealogical impact on New Mexico ancestry
  • current events affecting genealogy and family history
  • book reviews of genealogical publication

Articles for beginning or experienced genealogists are beneficial to our readership. Genealogies and examples of problem solving are accepted for publication if they are documented, emphasize effective research procedures and evidence evaluation, and/or thoroughly explain a new or unique research technique.

Sources used in the compilation should be described fully. It is our policy to provide previously unpublished genealogical records or material, particularly that which is not readily accessible to our readers.

The editor reserves the right to accept or decline any article submitted. Contributors are responsible for accuracy, omissions or factual errors, and for documenting statements of fact or statistical information, including the source for abstracted or transcribed records. Articles of varying length will be considered; longer articles may be serialized.

These should be properly documented with footnotes or endnotes, and if appropriate, a bibliography. Citations should follow Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian by Elizabeth Shown Mills, and secondarily, The Chicago Manual of Style. It is preferred that lineage compilations follow formatting as outlined in The BCG Genealogical Standards Manual, Millennium Edition, published by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. These books are available for purchase through the NMGS BookStore. Photographs and maps are welcome.

If possible, it is requested that material be submitted on both computer disk and follow-up paper copy. Authors, please provide your name and mailing address, plus other contact information, such as telephone number, e-mail address, and/or fax number.

1) Permission to publish. (Please initial your preference and submit this form with your article.)

_______  a) in the Genealogist quarterly journal, or
_______  b) on the NMGS web site

* Articles are published as space permits. The editors reserve the right to accept, reject or decline any article submitted.
* The same article should not be submitted to another publication (paper or web site) for a minimum of one year.

2) Copyright: If you wish to have an article copyrighted in your own name, please indicate this at the time your article is submitted.

For further information or questions, please contact the NMGS editor, Russ Shaw, at cynleornere@swcp.com, the NMGSweb editor at webmaster@nmgs.org, or by mail at the Society address below.
