2) Las Cruces
Diocese

1) The Archdiocese of Santa Fe (in yellow) is based in Santa Fe at the Office of Historic-Artistic Patrimony and Archives of the Archdiocese. All genealogical research is by appointment. New Mexico counties served by the AASF, are: Bernalillo, Colfax, Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Harding, Mora, Quay, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Taos, Torrance, Union, and Valencia. For addresses and further information, see Records: Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

In 2005, St. Francis of Assisi was amplified to "Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi." It is the first church in New Mexico's long history to be so honored. Being a Basilica means not only a change in title. St. Francis will receive a new coat of arms, as well as a canopy specially made in Rome, that is to be used for the occasions of major feasts or for any possible papal visit.

2) The Diocese of Gallup (in blue on the map) is based in Gallup, NM, and includes New Mexico counties of Catron, Cibola, McKinley, and San Juan, and parts of Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Bernalillo, and Valencia. It also covers three counties in Arizona: Apache, Cañoncino, and Navajo. An exception is that St. Catherine Parish in Cibecue (Navajo County), has a mission at Cedar Creek, (Gila County). For addresses and further information, see Records: Diocese of Gallup.

3) The Diocese of Las Cruces (in tan on the map) is based in Las Cruces, NM and includes New Mexico counties of Chaves, Doña Ana, Eddy, Grant, Hidalgo, Lea, Lincoln, Luna, Otero, and Sierra. For addresses and additional information, see Records: Diocese of Las Cruces

Special mention: The Archdiocese of Durango.
Even though the Durango Archdiocese is not in New Mexico, its archives have potential for genealogists and others with an interest in the southwestern U.S. and the Spanish Borderlands. Durango was made an archdiocese in June 1891 and now covers all the state of Durango and part of Zacatecas, with Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa for suffragens.

The notarial archives are housed in the Archivos Historicos del Estado de Durango (AHAD); however, filming of the entire contents was undertaken by a collaboration between the Archdiocese of Durango, Mexico, and the Rio Grande Historical Collections of the New Mexico State University Library.

The microfilm may be searched at Branson Hall (4th floor) on the NMSU Campus on Monday through Friday 9 AM - noon and 1 - 4PM. It is not available through circulation, copying, or loan. Questions may be directed to archives@lib.nmsu.edu, Rio Grande Historical Collections, NMSU Library MSC 3475, P.O. Box 30006, Las Cruces, NM 88003-0006. Phone (505) 646-4746. Information regarding the AHAD can be found at http://archives.nmsu.edu.

Further information on the Archdiocese of Durango can be found at: Catholic Encyclopedia: Durango, Mexico.

Locating Catholic Church Records in New Mexico is a work-in-progress and the pages will be updated as needed. If sending email to us with corrections or additions that apply to any of these pages, please put the words "church project" in the subject line, include source reference, and send to info@nmgs.org
