This is the first book of abstracted sacramental records that was published by the New Mexico Genealogical Society. Following are some excerpts from the Forward, by Virginia Langham Olmsted, C.G.:

"This index comprises extant records abstracted from nine registers dating from 1706 to 1850. Missing years date from 1737 through 1742 and from 1803 through 1821. (dates itemized *.) We have also included an additional index of mothers, paternal grandmothers, maternal grandparents and godparents to make this publication an every surname index."

"The spelling of each surname appears as it was written in the register, but each surname in the index is placed under the modern spelling. The registers are not without error. The eighteenth century scribe was as prone to mistakes as the twentieth century secretary. The most frequent error will be found in the recording of the mother's surname. It was customary for the godparents to bring the infant to the church for baptism. The mother rarely attended the rite. The sponsors gave the mother's name to the priest. She was listed sometimes by her mother's rather than her father's name, and occasionally her surname was omitted. . . . "

"In 1976, Archbishop Robert Fortune Sanchez, D.D., of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, gave me permission to start an indexing program for the collected parish registers in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe with the help of members of the New Mexico Genealogical Society. Our indexing work started with the baptismal registers -- 98 books of records dating from 1694 to 1850.

"Since that time, many members of the Society have given time to abstracting information from the registers and to setting up an indexed card file to be housed in the Archives. Fray Angelico Chavez, recently retired archivist, was an invaluable mentor in our early days of abstracting and indexing. He not only taught us to read the archaic script but also gave us mini-lectures on church history, New Mexico families and the evolution in the spelling of certain surnames. . . . "

"Members of the New Mexico Genealogical Society who have made this index possible are Helen Albus, Petrita Alcon, Evelyn Bishop, Catherine Blouin, Margaret Buxton, Yolanda Chavez, Janet Curtis, Donald Dreesen, Amelia Garcia, Wilma Gesler, Betty Gutierrez, Karen Hansen, Ralph Hayes, Sophie Kemm, Ella Louise May, Mary Merki, Felipe Mirabal, Andrea Montoya, Ann Mossman, Lila Pfeufer, Norma Simmons, Lenore Stober, Jean Talley, Frances Valdez and Margaret Windham. Special thanks are due Karen Hansen, who has typed the entire manuscript for this publication and to Margaret Windham, Special Publications Chairman, who has given long hours to proofreading and indexing, and to the final organization of this book."
