New Mexico Baptisms
San Miguel de Socorro Church
1821-1853

NMGS Press Item #A9, 1998
Indexed and spiral bound. $50.00. 510 pages.

Excerpts from the Introduction:

The town of Socorro, New Mexico, located along the Rio Grande Valley, is approximately 45 miles south of Belen, New Mexico, and about 80 miles north of Truth or Consequences. Actually it is centralized in the middle of the state of New Mexico.

It is known to have been named Nuestra Señora del Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) by Fray Martin de Arvide, who came in May of 1598 along with Spanish explorers under the leadership of Don Juan de Oñate. They found a friendly tribe of Indians who supplied them with a generous amount of corn, of which they were in great need. The explorers continued north along the Rio Grande. The introduction continues, containing a description of the San Miguel church and a list of the pastors.

"The original records are housed in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. There one may find microfilm copies of many of the original records in their possession. The extractions are done using the names, abbreviations, and the genealogical dating system (day, month, year). We strive for accuracy in all of our publications, but errors brought to our attention will be published in the New Mexico Genealogist."
