The New Mexico Genealogical Society

La Junta Precinct No. 11

and the area surrounding Fort Union
Mora and San Miguel Counties, New Mexico

Federal Censuses of 1860, 1870, and 1880

NMGS Press Item #B4, 1993
Indexed and spiral bound. $18.00. 162 pages.

From the first few paragraphs of the Preface:
"The 1860, 1870, and 1880 United States Census enumerations of the area surrounding Fort Union reflect a growing New Mexico and a demand for agricultural goods for the Quartermaster and Commissary Departments at the Fort . . Except for the fort itself, the census reflects the agrarian heritage and rural nature of the area, still evident today. It is not until the 1880 census that a number of settlements are oted and more retail establishments. The Santa Fe Railroad had reached Watrous in 1879 and the area now had an outlet, not only to the Southwest but to the entire world."

"The microfilm of these censuses is available at major New Mexico public and university libraries. It can also be ordered from the National Archives inWashington, D.C."
