Santa Fe Parish Census of 1821

NMGS Press Item #B5, 1994
Indexed and spiral bound. $22.00. 184 pages.

"This extremely comprehensive census . . . [is] one of the most complete and surely most correct in the Diocese of Durango." . . . Mary D. Taylor
{Santa Fe B5}In the historic year of 1821 orders came from Bishop Juan Francisco Castañiza in Durango, Mexico for his priests to supply census data of their parishioners. Fray Juan Tomas Terrazas of Santa Fe responded not only with a listing of all the souls in his Curato, but a complete demographic summary as well, by age, gender and marital status. He also gave in detail geographical characteristics of his parish district, which included Tesuque, Galisteo, and La Cienega with its surrounding ranches.

The result is the most complete census yet available of parishioners in the 1821 Santa Fe area. The book includes a glossary of terms, a bibliography, and glimpses of the original document in its beautiful Spanish script.

Compiled by Patricia Black Esterly, with acquisition and history by Mary D. Taylor, and dialogue translation by J. Richard Salazar. Introduction by Patricia Black Esterly. Published by the New Mexico Genealogical Society.
