3 tools for documenting your New Mexico roots:

Please send mail to P.O. Box 27559, Albuquerque NM 87125-7559

1st tool

 Pedigree (Ancestor) Chart

A pedigree chart is a simple way to begin the documentation of your family line because it lists only the father, mother and direct descendant in each generation. If you are interested in working with other searchers in the same lines, we encourage you to submit a pedigree chart for sharing with others who are searching the same family lines. The Pedigree charts are indexed and placed at the Special Collections branch of the Albuquerque Public Library. You can update your chart at any time that you find additional ancestors.

Although membership is welcome, the service is free to members and nonmembers.

Print and use Pedigree Chart (160 kb).

Print and use:  Baptismal Records Chart.

2nd tool

 New Mexico Ancestors

This is a NMGS project to identify those families who lived in New Mexico prior to statehood (1912), It is widely used as a networking tool. Information is submitted on the New Mexico Ancestors form. This form is similar to a family group sheet, listing the husband, wife and children. A copy of the submitted form will be placed at the Special Collections Branch of the Albuquerque Public Library, where it is available to other researchers. Space permitting, a summary will be published in the New Mexico Genealogist and/or on the NMGS web site. Information previously submitted may be updated at any time.

This service is free to members and nonmembers. An additional sheet may be added if necessary. Questions? E-mail to NM Records Chairman Ernie Jaskolski, or to info@nmgs.org.

3rd tool

 Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico

Primeras Familias (First Families) de Nuevo Mexico is similar to the second program, but requires verified documentation. Researchers whose ancestors lived in New Mexico during any of the historical periods listed below may submit proof of direct descent from that ancestor. New Mexico Genealogical Society, after verifying the documentation, will issue a certificate listing the name of the researcher and of the early New Mexico ancestor. The lineage will be published in the New Mexico Genealogist. There are several categories for the Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico certificate:

  • [Native] American Indian
  • Oñate Period 1598-1680
  • Reconquest Period 1692-1821
  • Mexican Period 1821-1846
  • Territorial Period 1846-1912

Qualifying for Primeras Familias de Nuevo Mexico is the ultimate proof of your hard work in researching your family. The certificates make beautiful gifts for those very special people in your family, as each is individually prepared and signed with the NMGS seal, and are suitable for framing.

There is a $15 processing fee for the first certificate ordered, and $10 for each additional certificate. Processing of applications requires one to six months, sometimes longer, depending upon the complexity of the application and the documentation provided.

Click here for a Primeras Familias application form and full instructions. Membership in the New Mexico Genealogical Society is welcome, but not required.
